Mt. SAC's 21-Game Win Streak Snapped by Cerritos College in 11-4 Loss

Walnut, Calif. – After 21 consecutive wins, the No. 2 ranked Mt. SAC Baseball Team was defeated by No. 3 ranked Cerritos College 11-4 at Mazmanian Field on Tuesday, April 1. Despite the loss, the Mounties remain atop the South Coast Conference with a 25-4 overall record and a 12-1 mark in conference play. Cerritos improves to 23-6 overall and 10-3 in the SCC.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

In this highly anticipated matchup, Cerritos gained the upper hand right off the bat when Evan Saito hit an RBI single that drove in Mateo Heredia for a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. The Falcons extended their lead in the third when Dylan Immel's sacrifice fly scored Isaiah Rio, making it 2-0.

Cerritos continued to flex their offensive power in the fifth. Wyatt Ormonde blasted a three-run homer, bringing in Brody Cuellar and Diego Orozco. Heredia then followed with a double to score Immel, pushing the Falcons' lead to 6-0.

The Falcons added two more runs in the sixth. Cuellar and Immel each had RBI singles, increasing the lead to 8-0.

Mt. SAC fought back in the bottom of the sixth. Landon White scored on a passed ball, and Ty Thomas came home on a groundout by Tyler Stull, cutting the deficit to 8-2. White then doubled in the bottom of the seventh to bring in Noah Rodriguez, narrowing the score to 8-3.

But Cerritos responded in the eighth, with Ormonde scoring on a sacrifice fly by Immel, and Rio crossing the plate on a Heredia single.

The Mounties added one final run in the bottom of the eighth when Jackson Giacone's sacrifice fly allowed Diego Ortiz to score. However, Cerritos capped the game with a run in the top of the ninth, with Orozco driving in a single to bring the final score to 11-4.

Izeah Muniz faced his toughest outing of the season, throwing just 4.1 innings. He allowed six earned runs, walked four batters, and struck out three as he suffered his first loss of the year.

NEXT UP:

The Mounties will look to bounce back in the second game of the three-game series against Cerritos College on Thursday, April 3. They will return home for the final game of the series on Saturday, April 5. Come out and support the Mounties as they aim to recover from the loss and defend their No. 2 ranking.
