Mounties Excel Across Multiple Events to Clinch South Coast Title

Long Beach, Calif. – The Mt. SAC Women's Track and Field Team proved once again why they are among the elite, capturing the South Coast Conference Championship with an impressive team score of 305 points. In a competitive field, the Mounties outpaced Cerritos College, who finished second with 238.5 points, and Long Beach City College, who came in third with 106.5.

Leading the way on the track was standout sprinter Leila Champion, who secured double gold with dominant performances in both the 100 meters (11.97) and 200 meters (24.65). In the middle-distance events, Kahlai Cruser (2:24.06)earned a silver medal in the 800 meters, while Kaitlyn Reyes (4:47.49)powered to a first-place finish in the 1500 meters, closely followed by Yadira Arnold (4:52.86) in second and Isabella Flores (5:00.41) in fourth, showcasing the team's exceptional depth.

The distance squad delivered a clean sweep in the 5000 meters, with Reyes again leading the way in 18:26.87. She was backed by a strong pack including Ava Cornell (18:27.76), Tigist Bergman (18:52.85), Sophia Ebiner (19:01.71), and Yadira Arnold (19:14.13), who impressively filled out the top five. Cornell (11:56.44) also claimed gold in the 3000-meter steeplechase, with teammate Rebekah Cueva (12:49.86) earning third.

Mt. SAC's hurdlers delivered a strong showing, led by Carlota Romay Rega, who claimed second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.62 and narrowly won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:06.51, edging out teammate Alyssah Johnson by just one-hundredth of a second. Johnson secured silver in the 400 hurdles and also placed third in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.65. Leilani Centeno contributed to the team's scoring as well, finishing fifth in the 100 hurdles in 16.98.

Mt. SAC added important points in the field events as well. Romay Rega also won the high jump, clearing 5' 1", while Alessandra Jefferson earned top honors in the triple jump with a leap of 36' 4.75". In the throws, Phoenix Raso placed third in the discus (117' 10") and fourth in the javelin (99' 7"), while Maya Rush secured a strong second-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 132 feet.

Relay teams contributed valuable points, with the 4x100 squad finishing fourth in 49.89 and the 4x400 team—composed of Johnson, Cruser, Megan Stauffer, and Enessah Hawkins—claiming second in a competitive race, finishing in 4:04.76.

With a deep, well-rounded team effort across all events, Mt. SAC's women firmly claimed the South Coast Conference title and are now looking ahead to the 3C2A Southern California Preliminaries, set for Saturday, May 3, at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo.
