Mt. SAC Women Set the Pace at SCC Championships

Long Beach, Calif. – The Mt. SAC Women's Track and Field Team wrapped up an outstanding first day at the South Coast Conference Championships, finishing atop the leaderboard with 96 points. Cerritos trails in second with 73 points, while host Long Beach City College holds third with 24.

Leila Champion led the charge in the sprints, placing second in the 100 meters with a time of 12.36 and third in the 200 meters, clocking 25.52. In the middle distances, Kahlai Cruser secured second in the 800 meters (2:20.93), with teammate Isabella Flores contributing a fifth-place finish (2:23.63).

Mt. SAC put on a dominant display in the 10,000 meters, sweeping the top four spots. Tigist Bergman claimed the title with a time of 40:22.94. She was followed by Maya Estrada-Garcia in second (40:43.19), Alondra Morales-Espinoza in third (41:08.36), and Denise Villarreal in fourth (41:16.94), giving the team a huge points boost in the distance event.

In the field events, Sofia Di Marco led Mt. SAC in the pole vault, placing second with a clearance of 11' 1.75". She was joined on the podium by Samantha Diener (third, 10' 8") and Rachel Kessel (fourth, 9' 8"), securing crucial team points. In the long jump, Annah-Bryce Wright took fourth with a mark of 17' 0.5", followed by Alessandra Jefferson in fifth at 16' 7".

In the throws, Sidney Sparks contributed a fifth-place finish in the shot put (34' 10.5") and also placed fifth in the hammer throw with a mark of 124' 7". Brooke Welliver earned a third-place finish in the hammer with a solid throw of 139' 9".

The heptathlon was another area of strength for Mt. SAC, as Carlota Romay Rega captured the win with 3,912 points. Jefferson followed closely in second with 3,896 points, adding yet another highlight to Mt. SAC's strong all-around performance.

The South Coast Conference Championships resume on Saturday, April 26, at Long Beach City College. Riding the wave of strong performances, Mt. SAC heads into the final day with a solid position in the team standings.
