Mt. SAC Women's Water Polo Goalie Kelly Jackson Named to 3C2A So Cal 2nd Team; Mercado, Gomez Chong, Gutierrez Also Honored

(Walnut, CA) – The Mt. SAC Women's Water Polo team, which reached the South Coast Conference Championship game this past season, recently unveiled its 2023 postseason award recipients.

Leading the charge for the Mounties was sophomore goalie, Kelly Jackson, earning a spot on the California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A) All-Southern California Second Team. Jackson, a starter since her freshman year in 2021 and continuing into this past season, also secured a place on the All-SCC First Team. Notably, she is the daughter of longtime Mt. SAC Women's Water Polo coach, Chris Jackson.

"I am proud as her coach and even prouder as her dad," Jackson said. "She worked hard, and I am delighted her efforts were recognized."

Kelly Jackson, who started in 19 games this past season, intends to transfer to the University of La Verne and participate in the upcoming Spring season. She notched 34 steals and 22 assists, ranking third in these categories for the team.

Joining Jackson on the All-SCC First Team are sophomore driver Shauna Mercado and freshman utility Gianna Gomez. Gomez led the team with 56 goals (66 shots, 84.8 SH%) and 31 assists while securing the fourth spot in steals with 30. Mercado, eyeing a transfer to a Northern California college next Fall, scored 17 goals, provided 12 assists, and ranked second in steals with 36.

Earning recognition on the All SCC Second Team were sophomore 2-meter Elizabeth Chong and freshman driver Jayde Gutierrez. Gutierrez clinched the second spot in team scoring with 49 goals (58 shots, 84.5 SH%), led in steals with 52, and placed second in assists with 28. Chong, who plans to transfer and play at Chapman University next Spring, placed third in team scoring with 47 goals and led in attempts with 68 (69.1 SH%).
