Mt. SAC Women’s Water Polo wins three games at 26th Annual Mountie Classic

(Walnut, CA) The Mt. SAC Women's Water Polo team hosted its 26th Annual Mountie Classic and came away with three wins in four games on Friday and Saturday (Sept. 22, 23).

With the three wins, the Mounties improved to 6-4 overall on the season.

Leading the way in the four games played was sophomore 2-meter Elizabeth Chong with 10 goals, while freshman utility Gianna Gomez had nine goals and nine steals.

Sophomore driver Jayde Gutierrez and freshman utility Maya Boiarsky scored eight and five goals, respectively. Gutierrez led the Mounties with 12 steals in the four games.

Meanwhile, sophomore goalie Kelly Jackson made 28 saves in the tournament and also scored two goals.

Game results

Game 1 – Friday, Sept. 22

Saddleback 21, Mt. SAC 2

Game one on Friday saw the Saddleback Bobcats overwhelm the Mounties and scored 12 first-half goals to Mt. SAC's one goal by Gomez. Boiarsky scored the only other goal in the third period.

Game 2 – Friday, Sept. 22

Mt. SAC 17, Santa Monica 3

The Mounties rebounded after the game-one loss and were led by Chong with three goals, followed by two goals each from Gomez (3 Stls.), Jackson and Boiarsky. Gutierrez led with seven steals.

Mt. SAC opened the first period with five goals, while shutting out the Corsairs and breezed to victory with 12 goals the rest of the way.

Game 3 – Saturday, Sept. 23

Mt. SAC 10, Grossmont 4

The Mounties, who scored 43 goals in the tournament, were led by Chong with five goals against Grossmont, while Gomez added three and Boiarsky had two.

After a close first period, with the Mounties holding a 2-1 lead, they exploded for seven goals in the second period for a comfortable, 9-1, halftime lead. The defense, along with Jackson (9 Saves), held the Griffins to three goals after the intermission.  

Game 4 – Saturday, Sept. 23

Mt. SAC 14, Palomar 5

The Mounties closed out their four games in the 15-team tournament with a win over the Comets, scoring five goals in the second and fourth periods to win going away.

Gutierrez had her best game of the season with seven goals, while Gomez and Chong had three and two goals, respectively.

Mt. SAC, which is undefeated at 2-0 in the South Coast Conference, will host Pasadena City College on Wednesday at home. Game time is 3:00 pm
