Mt. SAC Men's Soccer opens season with loss and tie in Nevada

(North Las Vegas, NV) The Mt. San Antonio College Men's Soccer team (0-1-1) traveled to Nevada to open its 2023 season with a 2-0 loss to Arizona Western College (3-0-1) on Friday, August 25, and a 4-4 draw against College of Southern Nevada (0-0-3) on Sunday, August 27. Both games were played at the Cheyenne Sports Complex in North Las Vegas.

With goals in the 41st and 79th minutes, the Matadors' offense proved to be too much for the Mounties to overcome.

Mt. SAC 4 Southern Nevada 4

On an assist from Victor Fregoso, Kenneth Flores scored a goal in the 3rd minute to put Mt. SAC up, 1-0. The Coyotes responded with goals in the 7th and 16th minutes to take a 2-1 lead, only to see Fregoso tie the game on an assist from Abel Salazar in the 25th minute. CSN added another score in the 39th minute to take a 3-2 lead into halftime.

The Coyotes tacked on another goal in the 60th minute to take a 4-2 lead, but the Mounties weren't done yet. Fregoso found the back of the net twice more on assists from Ernesto Figueroa in the 68th and 72nd minutes to tie the game, which is how it ended.

Goalie Edson Mendez played all 90 minutes in goal for Mt. SAC, making two saves.

The Mounties will host and compete in the annual Mt. SAC/Nike/Azteca Soccer Tournament which gets underway on Friday, September 1. Mt. SAC will face national powerhouse Richland (TX) College (2-0) at 8 p.m. on Friday and West Valley College (0-0) on Sunday, Sep. 3, at 10 a.m.
