
Cerritos, Calif. – The Mt. SAC Women's Wrestling Team kicked off their 2025 season with a strong second-place finish at the 3rd Annual Cerritos Women's Open on Saturday, January 25. The Mounties scored 117.0 points, trailing only Cerritos College (133.5 points), while University of Nevada Las Vegas rounded out the top three with 80.5 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
In the 117 lbs. weight class, Mackenzie Muniz took first place with an impressive fall over Mia Shepard from UNLV. Tiffany Yanagi also earned a podium finish, claiming 3rd place with a fall over Megan Sognefest of Cerritos College.
At 124 lbs., Mt. SAC saw an all-Mountie showdown as Leilani Lazaro claimed first place, pinning Herminia Estrada, who finished second.
The 138 lbs. weight class also featured a Mountie match, with Jasmine Macias securing a win by decision over Zitlali Sarmiento. In the same class, Manaia Tofilau placed fifth, earning a fall over Valerie Godina of Cerritos College.
In the 145 lbs. category, Alexis Jimenez fought hard but finished second after falling to Jessica Mendez of Arizona State Club by technical fall.
Megan Dean earned 3rd place in the 160 lbs. weight class, pinning Vida Beckel of Cerritos College.
Rounding out the Mounties' awards, Brianna Macias took 4th place in the 207 lbs. weight class, with Jade Seitz of East Los Angeles claiming the win by injury default.
The Mounties showed tremendous growth, improving on last year's 4th-place finish and surpassing their 2023 performance (5th place), proving the continued strength and development of the program in its third season.
