Mt. SAC Women’s Water Polo Team Blows Rio Hondo Out of the Water with 22-5 Win

The Mt. SAC Women's Water Polo Team overpowered Rio Hondo College 22-5 in their conference match up on Wednesday, October 2. With relentless pressure and sharp counterattacks, the Mounties controlled the tempo and showcased their offensive depth, leaving no doubt about their dominance in the pool.

The Mounties started strong, taking an early lead with seven goals in the first quarter. Carolyn Kao took things into her own hands, scoring just seconds into the first quarter. Lola Baiz and Arwen Castillo followed suit, setting the tone for the match. By the end of the first quarter, Mt. SAC led 7-3 and continued their offensive onslaught, adding nine more goals to make it 16-3 by halftime.

In the third quarter, the Mounties maintained their momentum, extending the lead to 18-4, with Calei Rodriguez adding a pair of goals. Mt. SAC sealed the deal in the final quarter with four additional goals, finishing with a strong 22-5 victory.

Key contributors included Viviana Gil with four goals, Calei Rodriguez and Arwen Castillo each with three, and Lola Baiz and Atty Omeyokan each with two. Goalkeeper Annika Shaffer held strong in the net, recording four saves.

Head Coach Chris Jackson commented on the match saying, "All the women did a great job. We were able to get deep into the bench giving the majority of the team the opportunity to execute the offense."

With this win, Mt. SAC shares the top spot in the South Coast Conference with Long Beach City College and Cerritos College, as all three teams hold a 3-0 conference record. Meanwhile, Rio Hondo falls to 0-3.

Next up, the Mounties will host Chaffey College, who currently holds a 1-3 overall record and is 0-2 in conference, on Wednesday, October 9, at 4:30 PM.
