Walnut, Calif. – The Mt. SAC Women's Basketball Team rolled past West LA College with a commanding 85-58 win in the second round of 3C2A SoCal Regionals on Saturday, March 1. With this victory, the Mounties' record improves to 25-4, while the Wildcats end their season at 19-11.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
West LA got started with an early 4-0 advantage after layups from Alana Young and Kennedee Rankin. However, Mt. SAC wasted no time responding, as Naomi Acuna drained a three-pointer and Daisia Mitchell followed with a layup to put the Mounties in the control for the remainder of the game. They maintained their momentum, closing the first quarter with a 24-14 lead.
The second quarter was the most competitive, with Acuna, Mitchell, and Destiny King each adding four points. Frances Potts also contributed a three-pointer, bringing the Mounties' quarter total to 15. Meanwhile, the Wildcats stayed within reach, hitting four three-pointers—two from Alana Young and one each from Aliyah Young and Andrea Hinton—keeping the halftime score at 39-28 in favor of Mt. SAC.
The Mounties came out of the halftime break ready to play, delivering their highest-scoring period of the game. Mitchell led the charge with 12 points, while Taliyah McFerson added eight, including a layup and two free throws. The Wildcats' twin duo, Alana and Aliyah Young, attempted to close the gap with a mix of free throws, three-pointers, and field goals, but West LA only managed 16 points in the quarter compared to Mt. SAC's 27.
Mt. SAC sealed their victory in the final quarter with key contributions from Loremy Lopez, who hit a three-pointer and two free throws, and Ryann Riddle, who added four points. Mt. SAC's dominance extended beyond the scoreboard, as they outrebounded the Wildcats 40-28 and committed only 14 turnovers compared to West LA's 27. The Mounties also controlled the paint, nearly doubling West LA's output with 48 points inside compared to the Wildcats' 20.
