(Walnut) The Mounties Women's Basketball Team, ranked number 1 in the South, opened their season off with three tournament wins and the Mountie Tip-Off Tournament Championship this past weekend.
Mt. SAC opened up the tourney with a pair of wins, the first against San Diego City, 98-59. Caira Benton led all scorers with 21 points. The second game against San Bernardino led to another Mounties victory, 96-73, with 5 Mounties scoring in double figures, led by Jonnae Vermillion, 21 points, Allyah George with 14 points and Tahniya Sweatt and Gina Henderson with 13 points apiece.
In the Tournmaent Championship on Sunday the Mounties took on a familiar foe in conference rival Long Beach City.
The Mounties led the Vikings at the half, 53-34 before opening up the lead in the second half by as many as 27. The final score was 92-68 with Jonnae Vermillion leading all scorers with 26 points and receiving All-Tournment MVP, while teammate Tahniya Sweatt finished with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists to earn an All-Tournament selection.
The team travels to Grossmont College on November 20th for a 6 pm tip off.
