(East Los Angeles, California) The Mounties, leading after two days of competition, finished the third and final day of the South Coast Conference Swimming and Diving Championships very strong, winning three of the six events contested.
Freshman Phillip Wright started the final day of competition off with a win in the 1650 Free, swimming the fastest time the state this year, 16:04.93. Phillip's time established a new school record in the 1650, his 1000 split of the same race also established a new school record in that event. Freshman Cody Wood, Freshman Brody Coulter, and Sophomore John Diskin finished third, fourth and sixth respectively.
Two events later, in the 200 Breaststroke, with favorite Jacob Altree out with flu like symtoms, Sophomore Emmett Poon came home with the second win of the night in a time of 2:11.68. Sophomore Michael Lee and Freshman Jacob Rehrer finished fourth and fifth respectively.
In the very next event, Sophomore Ryan Morales upset top seeded fellow Mountie, Sophomore Eric Aguirre in the 200 Butterfly in a time of 1:57.19, just 4/100ths of a second ahead. Freshman Greg White and Freshman Kyle Clancy finished fourth and seventh respectively.
The Mounties battled back from behind to finish second in the final event of the night, the 400 Free Relay, which gave them more than enough points to finish off rival Cerritos College who finished over 200 points back in second place. "Our depth was our strength" said Head Coach Marc Ruh, "This is a very hard working and close knit team that wasn't going to let anyone else get this title".
Freshman Phillip Wright earned South Coast Conference Men's Swimmer of the Year honors for his outstanding performance throughout the meet, winning all three of his individual events. Coach Marc Ruh earned SCC Men's Swimming Coach of the Year honors. Congratulations to Coach Ruh, Phillip and the Mountie Swimmers on an outstanding conference season.
The Mounties will be back in action at the CCCAA State Swimming and Diving Championships April 30th - May 2nd, at East Los Angeles College.
