(San Jacinto, CA) Mt. SAC freshman golfer Ethan Thomas was "Mr. Consistent" at the CCCAA State Men's Golf Championships on Monday, May 16 at Soboba Springs Country Club.

The first-year college golfer carded a 2-over-Par 74 in the morning round and came right back with the same score (74) in the afternoon for a 4-over-Par, 148 at the state championships.

He finished second as an individual, one stroke behind Tristain Jamarillo of Modesto with a 147.

The overall low medalist was Giacomo Sorrentino of Folsom Lake College with a 139 (69-70). Eight teams and 56 golfers competed on the 3,550-yard course.

"I am so proud of Ethan (Thomas)," Mt. SAC Men's Golf Coach Greg Osbourne said. "He gave everything he had and just had some bad luck. He never gave up once.

"He is a great player and represents Mt. SAC with class and pride."

Thomas, who averaged 72.5 in the Orange Empire Conference Inland Division matches during the season, was named to the All-OEC first-team.

In the CCCAA So Cal's, Thomas also finished second in the individual competition with a 146.

"It was awesome," said Thomas, of the state experience. "I have been very consistent lately, but I would like to get better.

"I made a lot of five to 10-foot putts and that helped me stay in there and grind out every stroke."

Thomas also said he enjoyed the team's play this past season.

"I like the team experience," he said. "It's a lot of fun with the guys before the match."

In addition, since the team didn't qualify for the state competition, Thomas knew he was representing his team and the school.

"It was very special and with some pressure representing the school," he added. "It was a good pressure. I liked representing Mt. SAC."

Thomas was 4-over-Par on the front nine at the state championships in the morning round and came back in with a 2-under-Par. His 2-under on the back nine was highlighted by birdies on the 17th and 18th holes.

With his 2-under on the back nine in the am round, his confidence remained raised for the final 18 holes in the afternoon.

"Going into the second 18, coming back in the second round, it gave me some hope that I could do something," Thomas concluded.

Coming home with the state team title was defending champion, College of the Canyons, its 10th overall title since 1993.

COC (770) narrowly defeated Saddleback (772) by two strokes.
