Mounties Football pops cork on new season with win over Mt. San Jacinto

(Walnut, CA) In its opening game of the 2023 season, host Mt. San Antonio College (1-0) handed Mt. San Jacinto College (0-1) a 23-7 non-conference defeat on Saturday, Sept. 2.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Mounties got on the board first with a 13-yard pass from Alex Flores (12-21, 77 yards, TD, INT) to Dedrek Taylor-Akins at the 11:23 mark of the second quarter. A two-yard run by Samuel Green (12 carries, 135 yards, 2 TD) put Mt. SAC up 13-0 with 8:08 to play before the half. Diego Esqueda connected on a 30-yard field goal with 2:05 to play in the second to give the hosts a 16-0 halftime lead.

Green added to the Mounties' lead with a 31-yard run at the 10:30 mark of the fourth quarter to go up 23-0, and then the Eagles scored their lone touchdown of the night with 0:33 to play.

On the ground, Nicholas Floyd added 81 yards on 12 carries for Mt. SAC.

Top Mountie receivers included Anthony Felton (seven catches, 36 yards) and Taylor-Akins (two catches, 24 yards, TD).

Mt. SAC dominated the stat sheet with 405 yards of total offense (103 passing, 302 rushing) to MSJC's 235 (223 passing, 12 rushing).

Juan Salas (12 tackles, six solo), Reggie Johnson (five tackles, three solo, 3.5 sacks) and Katin Surprenant (five tackles, one solo, one sack) led the Mountie defense, which tallied seven sacks on the night.

Next up for Mt. SAC is a road game at Ventura College (1-0) on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 6 p.m. The Mounties are 4-1 against the Pirates in the last 5 meetings, including a 55-29 win in 2017, when the teams last met.
